Stockholm Syndrome

Jason Harwell shares his thoughts on Derek Webb's latest offering:
Webb is the closest thing our westernized christian culture has to J.D. Salinger and Bob Dylan rolled into one. And much like our response to these two figures, we can be upset by either the literal interpretations of the artist's words or the fact that he went electric (or digital, in Webb's case).

The Real Mr Jones

Aled Jones on the Power of Music:
'...people come up to me and say my CDs have helped them overcome cancer, or cope with a great loss in their life... I can't really dwell on those moments, because when I sing, when I record or when I'm on stage I try to give every single ounce of my being into the music, totally -- as if driven by something else. And maybe that's what people can connect with... I don't know.'

The Other Me: Paul Colman Uncut

Paul Colman on Integrity:
'When it comes down to what I think about a 'Christian industry'... my mind first thinks about people. I think about the people I know, I think about the quality of the people I know. I know there are people out there who have bad motivations -- I know, I have been one of them. I know I believe that everyone in the world has mixed motives and I think that if you don't realise that, you are actually fooling yourself. I don't think there is such a thing as a perfectly pure motive, because we are just not born that way.'

The Curse of Idol-ness

Matt Corby on Fame:
'...it's been really hard for me 'cause I'm naturally very shy. That sounds weird 'cause I'm a performer... but I don't have heaps of friends... I'd actually rather hang out with myself in a room with my guitar than go to a party, so it's weird when these people come up to you on the street knowing so much about your life -- even more than you sometimes!'

'There is no better definition of christian music than that which was inspired by the Holy Spirit, and penned by the apostle Paul in Colossians 3:16. "Christian music is music that reflects you have put on the "new man", who has the word of Christ, dwelling (living) in him richly (a lot), that teaches and admonishes others through psalms, hyms, and spiritual songs to do the same.'

- Minister Randall Ogans

'Christian music is Christ's light shining in the darkness, soaring in the heavens and in the earth to illuminate everything. As in Christ himself, all life is sacred, so his music in us resonates in and through all life. The sacred permeates, enlightens, and transforms the secular, to the glory of God our creator.'
- Geoff Waugh

'Christian Music is: bland, generic, sappy, derivitive, predictable, unadventurous, religous, preachy, embarrassing, commercial, calculated, manipulative, artless, unsurprising, pre-packaged, frozen, processed, inaccessible to outsiders, alienating to earthlings, in need of resuscitation, too hungry for credibility, deserving of our contempt.

Those words are indeed judgemental and harsh. Tarring [everyone] with the same brush. Unfortunately there is a christian music industry that has defined a christian music genre. Not everyone deserves the critiscism but those who pursue their art to the greater glory of God or the edification of the unwashed [should] find a means of disentagling themselves from the business of making christian music. No cash for comment.

The best music being made by christian musicians no longer sits comfortably under the label of Christian Music. It's just music made by Christians.'
- Dirk Logemann

'Christian music' could be defined as 'Music made by a Christian', but perhaps music should not be categorised in this way as God created all music, not just selected notes. Many people look to lyrics to define 'Christian music'. However, this is less than ideal. Too much of 'Christian music' is lacklustre and mediocre when viewed as 'art'. Art is art. Music is music. Let's be careful not to make too much of the Christian/Secular dichotomy.
- VIc Campbell

'I simply believe Christian music is
any music that turns a person's heart toward Christ. It doesn't necessarily need lyrics. It can be sung by a saint or a sinner. As long as it represents Christ's Truth, God will use it to reveal Himself to His creation.'
- Dave Gray
