The Curse of Idol-ness

Matt Corby on Fame:
...it's been really hard for me 'cause I'm naturally very shy. That sounds weird 'cause I'm a performer... but I don't have heaps of friends... I'd actually rather hang out with myself in a room with my guitar than go to a party, so it's weird when these people come up to you on the street knowing so much about your life -- even more than you sometimes!

Dangerous Questions...

David Herndon on Faith and Risk Taking:
'It's okay to be frustrated with God. It's not okay to give up on God. But really, our doubts -- instead of being a hinderance to our faith -- can be an accelerator to our faith. ...we've got to be willing to risk a little bit, to humble ourselves, to be uncomfortable and maybe even go through a little pain so that we can get closer to God. Once we've... experienced his salvation and his rescue in our life, that should empower us and encourage us to get even more 'dangerous' in some sense.'

'Independent Folk. For Independent Folk...'

Jason Harwell on Contemporary Christian Music:
'I’ve decided that I’m not a CCM artist, I don’t have any part of this… it’s hard ‘cause you don’t want to be pegged as a ‘Christian Artist’ because it is just an extension in the minds of most ‘normal’ people in America — the unchurched — it’s music for the people who are on the street corner yelling at you. It’s propaganda...'

The Art of Being Brooke

Brooke Fraser on Her Place in the Church:
'You can't put what God is doing on this earth into a box... it can't be summarised into tidy categories. Whatever God is doing through my life, it's not just about me. There's a stirring happening in God's Church, through the creative arts, creative ministries and other things too...'

Okay, so what's your (concise) definition of 'Christian Music' then?

E-mail a brief answer (no more than 100 words, please!) to us at the below address:

and the best/most interesting responses will NOT be entered in a draw to win a brand new Apple iPod, but instead be featured (along with a link back to the artist's website!) on About Christian Music...

-----------------------------------------------------------

'Christian Music is: bland, generic, sappy, derivitive, predictable, unadventurous, religous, preachy, embarrassing, commercial, calculated, manipulative, artless, unsurprising, pre-packaged, frozen, processed, inaccessible to outsiders, alienating to earthlings, in need of resuscitation, too hungry for credibility, deserving of our contempt.

Those words are indeed judgemental and harsh. Tarring [everyone] with the same brush. Unfortunately there is a christian music industry that has defined a christian music genre. Not everyone deserves the critiscism but those who pursue their art to the greater glory of God or the edification of the unwashed [should] find a means of disentagling themselves from the business of making christian music. No cash for comment.

The best music being made by christian musicians no longer sits comfortably under the label of Christian Music. It's just music made by Christians.'

- Dirk Logemann

'Christian music' could be defined as 'Music made by a Christian', but perhaps music should not be categorised in this way as God created all music, not just selected notes. Many people look to lyrics to define 'Christian music'. However, this is less than ideal. Too much of 'Christian music' is lacklustre and mediocre when viewed as 'art'. Art is art. Music is music. Let’s be careful not to make too much of the Christian/Secular dichotomy.

- VIc Campbell

'I simply believe Christian music is
any music that turns a person's heart toward Christ. It doesn't necessarily need lyrics. It can be sung by a saint or a sinner. As long as it represents Christ's Truth, God will use it to reveal Himself to His creation.'

- Dave Gray
